First Week, A Setback, New Eating Plan

Tiny setback this weekend...too many glasses of vino Friday ruined my Saturday plan, so I nursed myself back to health and have a new resolve to continue this plan. I did end up walking about 25 miles last week, so that's nothing to sneeze at, but I think my love of wine is gonna have to be put on hold while I'm doing this for myself. I get hangovers pretty easily and I want nothing to detract from my desire to make this experiment a success.

Now that that's out of the way, I got my Body by Vi shake mixes in on the 10th and am starting them today. For breakfast it's a smoothie with unsweetened almond milk, frozen organic berries, ice cubes, stevia and two scoops of Sweet Cream protein powder. Same thing for lunch, with an organic apple, and for dinner I've prepared slightly sauteed savoy, kale, red cabbage, orange rind, tomato, chia seed and quinoa salad. I water sauteed the ingredients and they're packed and ready to follow me to work this afternoon. I also made a container of water with cucumber, lemon and orange and will be drinking off of that for the next couple of days.

I have all the tools and information at my disposal, the hard part is getting motivated to get out there and do it! I'm set to walk my five miles today, but it may end up being only an hour's worth of walking because I've gotten a late start. We're in the process of packing up the house to sell and I've been around town buying up moving boxes. So much to do, so little time! Isn't that always the case?

I've got my sunscreen on and I'm heading out the door in about twenty minutes. This is an exceptionally busy week with contractors and doctor's appointments, so if I can get in an hour a day of walking, I'll be happy.

Day One Complete (Last Day "One" Ever!)

First off, let me say that from whatever Facebook hype I've been reading, I can only ascertain that Chris Mann rocked it tonight on "The Voice". I'm super happy to see a fellow opera singer get kudos. I'm also insanely jealous but that's another story.

Food today: Breakfast: Didn't happen until noon. I've heard that if you work out on an empty stomach, your body burns whatever fat it needs to to function. Truth or fiction? I'm willing to try it. Kris Carr also says in her book "Crazy Sexy Diet" to hold off on eating until after twelve. She suggests a glass of green juice and hot herbal tea, or water with a pinch of cayenne pepper. I didn't do any of that but I've got some experience with her cleanse so it's always an option.

Ok, breakfast. It was half of a Southwestern Veggie Wrap from Archer Farms. I'm glad I looked that puppy up, because in just one wrap there's 600 calories!! I really could've messed up my entire day if I'd eaten the whole thing!

Lunch: Protein shake made with unsweetened almond milk, two scoops of "The Biggest Loser" whey protein, frozen organic berries, chia seeds and unsweetened cocoa. Salad with mixed greens, 1 sliced avocado (small) and mango-peach salsa for dressing.

Dinner: Amy's Organic Palak Paneer. My favorite Amy's Indian and the creamed spinach tastes like Christmas.

Snack: 1 small package Rold Gold pretzels with mango-peach salsa, three butterscotch candies.

I drank mostly water throughout the day with about 10 ounces of Diet Coke. How do you guys think I did?

Walking day #2 is tomorrow...I'm going to try the track at the Y instead. I've got a doctor's appointment so I'm going earlier than today, which is why I should go to bed right now!

PS It's actually two hours later than what the post says. Why is that?

First Full Day

Today started out well. I was able to get up at a decent time (9:15) and make it to the Y by 10. I spent an hour and forty minutes on the treadmill, and it was one without a television so I started getting kind of bored. The only thing that pushed me through the boredom was the curiosity of whether or not I could actually walk five miles without stopping. I was pretty sure I could but I had a little bit of doubt. I can't believe I'm quasi-complaining about being on a treadmill without a television; surely that qualifies as a "first world problem", right? I know I'll have to get a good route going outdoors because there's no way I can walk on a treadmill six days a week. I know that'll get boring fast.

My speed stayed between 3.1 and 3.5. I'd like to be able to go faster but for right now I'm just concentrating on distance. As it becomes easier I can pick up the pace.

Headed off to work, I'll update more later!

Day One

I feel like I'm always saying in my head, "Okay, this is Day One." Day One of my new life, my new diet plan, my new exercise plan, my way out of these 50 pounds that have crept up over the past few years. It seems that no matter what I start or how gung-ho I am in the beginning, my resolve fizzles out and I'm left holding the bag (i.e. expensive diet plans, an exercise machine, workout clothes).

I've struggled with my weight since I was eight years old. That's right about the time I started to get chubby in class pictures and noticed a difference between myself and the other girls in school. Their legs were lithe, tan, willing to spin them around the uneven bars on recess. Mine were pasty, thicker, and scared as hell to climb up on those things. I would've preferred instead to hole up under a tree and delve into the next chapter of Harriet the Spy. All while munching on a tomato sandwich on white bread, of course.

Now that I'm approaching my mid-thirties, I'm starting to realize just how much time I've wasted being overweight. I've bounced around from weighing 140 while dating unavailable men and drinking whiskey on weeknights to my current weight of *gulp* 200 pounds, which is something I never thought I'd see. I'm not happy with it, and certainly not proud of it, so I'm really desperate for a solution.

Enter my husband of 11 months, a recent addition to the fleet of letter carriers in Wichita, Kansas. He and I both have worked for the US Postal Service for more than ten years, but I've stayed in a sedentary supervisory role while he's taken to the streets, delivering mail six days a week and walking between eight and ten miles each of those days. Since he started carrying on February 25, 2012, he's lost 20 pounds. And honestly, that was 20 pounds he didn't have to lose.

My husband is 6'2". I'm 5'7". He should weigh more than me. Right now, he doesn't. That's all about to change.

I've committed myself to eating healthier, and I'm waiting on my first shipment of Body by Vi shakes to arrive. While I'm not a fan of meal replacement (I don't think it teaches you how to eat properly), I've got to jump start my weight loss. In the 20 months my husband and I have been together, I've gained 24 pounds. I'm not the girl he asked out, and I'm certainly not the girl who accepted. Back then I was exercising regularly and sticking to 1,500 calories a day.

So my food is taken care of (for now), and I've dreamed up this gimmick to shed pounds: Exercise like a letter carrier. That means I'm going to start by walking five miles a day, six days a week, for a month. After that I'll move up to seven miles a day, and then end at ten. I have these hours to spend at the Y right now and I plan on doing just that.

Come along with me on my quest to slim down and cheer up. I could use the company.

*Author's Note: This blog/workout plan is just something I've dreamed up. It is in NO WAY endorsed or created by the United States Postal Service. I just work there.
